The Unite Union's appeal is upheld, reintroducing the threat of strike action. British Airways requests that you only come to the airport if you have a confirmed booking.  The Unite union says the British Airways cabin crew will go on strike for 5 days from the 24th May.

British Airways and Iberia sign a merger deal to create the largest European carrier after Lufthansa. Iberia and British Airways will be grouped under a new holding company, known as International Airlines Group, which will be quoted on stock exchanges in Madrid and London. Iberia retain the right to terminate the deal if British Airway's pension-recovery plan is thought to be "materially detrimental to the economic premises of the merger". Ryanair described the merger as being "like two drunks trying to prop each other up".

"British Airways and Iberia have today [Thursday] taken a further step towards creating a new leading European airline group by signing their merger agreement," BA & Iberia said in a joint statement.

British Airways and Iberia approve an agreement to merge, involving Iberia owning 45% of the combined company and BA the remaining 55%. British Airways' Willie Walsh will be chief executive and the chairman will be Antonio Vazquez, who is chairman at Iberia. The airline’s headquarters will be in London.

BA Flight 288 from Phoenix to London fills with smoke as it prepares to take off. Passengers & crew used the Boeing 747's emergency slides to evacuate, with a number suffering minor injuries through the use of the slide (one crew member and one passenger were hospitalised overnight).
